We get a lot of "your work is beautiful!", or "...pretty!", or "...gorgeous!" and that is great, and we REALLY appreciate that, but honestly, we don't want it to be just that. We also want it to be intriguing, meaningful, badass and have more under the hood. We aren't just painting pretty things, we are painting 23 years of John owning a landscape company and NOT painting. We are painting that same amount of years of Jeff doing graphic design to meet client objectives and NOT creating anything for himself. We are painting passion — and inspiration, and contrast, and work ethic, and questions, and anxiety, and fear. Our works and our lives are caught "Somewhere Between" "pretty" and all of that.

This piece is one of three in a series of flower studies where we are exploring ways to make a flower more badass and less "that's pretty". We love making works that involve flowers not only because they are beautiful but because they have played such an integral part in our lives (with John owning a landscape maintenance company for 23 yrs and Jeff being yard and garden nut). The title is a nod to how the painting looked at one point and then took an unexpected turn and completely changed.

This piece embodies our continued exploration of combining each of our talents into one piece. John noted on the painting that I put together about ten elements for the composition. He then did the hard part and created the final piece (the eleventh element) from that initial vision. With his talent for drawing and painting combined with my graphic design background, and all the back and forth during the process, we think we might just be creating something a little different over here.

We have no problem with people seeing different things in our work but when we originally posted this on instagram and fb, not one, but several people said they saw pooh bear above the bridge to the right. So, we slightly modified it because that wasn’t our intent. We just changed a couple of colors that probably triggered those responses and then, as a nod to the classic character and also to being able to not take ourselves too seriously, pooh bear now became part of the piece as he floats away in the upper left.
The piece really is about channeling both of our (creative) energies and personalities together. Our work is always about good vibes, thriving, resourcefulness, faith, positive movement, contrasting elements, finding middle ground and saying no to the extremes and divisiveness.

Can you guess the hardest part of this painting? Not the flowers. Not the bridge. But, the sky. Yep, the sky. It may seem like “white space” as it’s called in the design industry but white space is NOT dead space — especially in this piece. It has as much to say about the painting as any other part — maybe even more. Faith, hope, questions, answers, confidence, insecurities — all wrapped up in that damn sky.

This piece is titled "Harmony", as in many elements working together to create a pleasing affect. It was inspired by a photo of Music Hall Jeff took a while back when the sun was shining onto that beautiful red/orange brick. The flourishes in the middle were inspired by the wood panels of the giant organ that was part of the grand opening in 1878.

This piece is the perfect example of Jeff's graphic design and photography skills merging with John's painting and drawing talent. For this piece, Jeff was inspired by iconic Music Hall and by his work re-branding the CSO (Fun fact: Jeff designed the logo and the look and feel of the current CSO). Mix it all together with the beautiful gardens of Washington Park and this is what emerged. The images here will give clues to how it all comes together.

This painting is inspired by the epic Roebling Suspension Bridge which is a flat-out icon of Cincinnati. It ascends from the mighty Ohio up to the clear blue sky. When you look at it, you can't help but fall in love. It's even better to drive across and experience the hum of the tires on the grated roadway as you look up at girders and cables passing you by. If you look closely at the painting, we have embedded hints of these girders, the curve of the cables and the date of the official opening of the bridge in 1867. The flowers (Purple Pansies) captures part of the experience of walking in Smale Park near the bridge.

This piece is titled “Space Between” and is inspired by Smale Riverfront Park in Cincinnati. Using the iconic suspension bridge as the anchor, the supporting elements are a nod to the park which creates a really awesome ‘space between’ the city and the riverfront where folks go for a stroll, hang out, bike, walk, play and be inspired. As you scroll through the images, you can see the key words, moodboard and digital rough that I gave John as a starting point. It’s always awesome to see how he brings all of that together in the final piece!

This self portrait of John is inspired by a Van Gogh quote that says “i am always doing what i cannot do yet in order to learn how to do it”. So John experimented with combining his own take on Van Gogh’s Three Sunflowers painting mashed up with a self portrait to create this unique piece influenced by the past but that is completely new.

Jeff was early for a meeting in downtown Cincinnati one summer day and was walking through Washington Park snapping some photos when he captured a nice shot of storied Cincinnati Music Hall with some beautiful yellow flowers in the foreground. Originally, this piece was done for a collector of western art, but, honestly, the collector never collected it. LOL. Maybe too contemporary, we guess, not really sure?! But we still have a lot of love for this piece and the meaning John worked so hard to build into it. Among lots of other thoughts, the title "For Spacious Skies?" with the question mark represents that the Native American's questions of what's going to happen to the land and his people and also questions the settlers motivations as they tore through the country.

This is one of our first paintings. Honestly, we still really dig it. It is titled “Thrive” because, from day one, we felt like we could thrive and not starve —- as is the common myth regarding artists. We actually think the idea of starving artists is a really crappy idea to perpetuate. We think there is value in creating something people love —- and even more value in the fact that it will last for generations. Here’s to all the artists who work hard to thrive.
