Once a reference image that I create leaves my hands, I’m never quite sure what the outcome will be (although we do have many back-and-forth conversations during the process). When John text me his first pass at this one I joked and sent back “Scrumptious” — which is a word I would never use — which is why it was funny to us, lol. I proceeded to give him the rest of my feedback but the title was born. Inspired by lake trips, sunrises and sunsets.

Titled "Beyond the Rooftops & Attic Windows". This gorgeous old church in Ludlow is an absolute hidden gem where we went to kindergarten and where John's father-in-law was the minister for 18 years. Although this painting has ties to our past, it's about a lot more than that --- it's about looking beyond physical structures to reflect on vast and incomprehensible wonders and a deeper faith --- it's about looking up and taking a second look to figure out what defines you, you know, way beyond the rooftops.

The day we started this piece, I was in a mood and, honestly, a little bit of a funk. Truth is, that John and I can be moody sometimes even though some people might think everything seems all unicorns and rainbows. That’s just not real life. So, as I was working through the digital rough draft for this piece (see the second image), I liked the contrast of the pretty flower against the moody face because it began to suggest that things may look pretty on the surface, but if you do a little digging, you may find that there’s a little more to the story. The truth exists somewhere in that middle whitespace area where the outside and the inside collide.
